Basic Geostatistics Knowledge

Geostatistics is, by itself, an invaluable tool which can be used to characterize temporal or spatial phenomenal.

Geostatistics course is designed to cover some theory but it’s mainly focused on practical applied procedures, which can be used to create real models. Participants will employ modeling software to put many of the techniques into practice by building simple models.

In both above mentioned industries, geostatistics is successfully applied to solve cases, in which decisions, which concern expensive operations are based on interpretations from sparse data located in space.

Geostatistics has since then been related to the earth geotechnical engineer sciences in or extended to many other fields:

• geochemistry
• geography
• landscape ecology
• hydrology
• meteorology
• oceanography
• soil sciences
• forestry

In the geostatistics course both simple, practical applications in the earth sciences and fundamental development of geostatistics will be presented. Projects and exercises in this course are designed to help to elucidate the fundamental concepts.

Students are going to be given the reading assignments to help illustrate the applications of geostatistics in the particular chosen by student field of reservoir modeling and characterization.

Master of Geostatistics Course

This program is designed to provide intensive practical training and theoretical background in the science of geostatistics with particular emphasis on its applications to:

• geological modelling,
• geotechnical modelling,
• mineral resource evaluation,
• the prediction and modelling of environmental variables,
• hydrocarbon reservoir characterisation.

The program is mostly based on practical applications and a major goal is to equip its graduates with the techniques, which are necessary for immediate application to problem solving in applied science and industry.

This program, if delivered through intensive courses, is designed specifically for people in full time employment and can be completed in a year and a half.

Core courses are the same for all students, but they have a focus depending on the student’s specialisation.

The dissertation and project are undertaken in one of the following specialisations:

• Mineral Resource Evaluation,
• Reservoir Modelling and Hydrocarbon Resources,
• Geotechnical Engineering,
• Groundwater Modelling.

Students, who are sure about their inclinations, should consult the program coordinator early in the year in which they plan to study to check whether particular projects or courses are available.

Petroleum Geostatistics Course

The main goal of Petroleum Geostatistics course is to learn the basic statistical and geological concepts, which are used to characterize hydrocarbon reservoirs. The coursework culminates in a multipart project, which incorporates much of what was learned during the course. This course is designed to teach students how to use geostatistical tools to create high quality petroleum reservoir models.
